My art as the Greenwoman is about shifting consciousness–my own and that of my audience.
From a planetary perspective humanity is running out of time. Our existence on this planet, our disconnected, consumer driven lifestyles, are forcing extinctions of vast numbers of species and the richness and diversity of life here is being utterly threatened. For so long we have ignored the basic foundation that underlies our existence–that all life is interconnected–and in so doing
we create our own undoing.
In my alter-ego as the Greenwoman I step into this realm of connection. With this symbolic image
of a being that embodies a merging of both worlds, I choose to act as an emissary of Nature.
This green being (in both male and female forms) has been a symbolic presence over many
hundreds or perhaps thousands of years and can be found in the carvings in churches
all over Europe. Created by the artists of that time, these foliated beings represent a
connection to the old Nature driven beliefs that came before the expansion of religions. I choose
to speak for Nature and invite my audience to step across the barrier that we have erected and open ourselves to a bigger realm, an Elemental world where light is the energy that feeds us all
in a web of interconnected life.
As the Greenwoman my work is taking a number of directions. Through my photography I create editions of images that are intended to open up our “seeing” in this connected realm. In my Elemental Spirits series, through the process of mirroring, the underlying fractal nature of life reveals the beings that are present within Nature. These beings are spoken of by all indigenous cultures. Through shamanistic practices these societies have maintained a connection to the web of life and recognize the importance of living this way. By setting intention to establish connections to this realm, I create images within a flow that is designed to provide doorways or portals for my audience.
Through performance events I strive to create experiences that provide other kinds of portals of connection. The Greenwoman creates events that celebrate the pivotal points in the cycles of our planet. Celebrating the Solstices, the point of change in our journey around the sun, and creating multimedia installations with holograms and projected 3D installations about issues of Planetary Healing–these are my tools to open my audience to new possibilities and to present experiences that can shift consciousness.
